The streaming service’s most intriguing point of leverage is that it could use these advantages to become a recorded-music label itself, working directly with artists. Matthew Ball, an analyst, argues that Spotify is sure to start cutting deals with artists in which it pays an upfront guarantee and promises a percentage of streaming revenue that is much smaller than it pays labels, but far more than artists get now.

“President Trump promised to ‘Make America Great Again.’ The rest of the world thinks he is having the opposite effect.” …and this is really the heart of the matter… while the US happily bathes in the daily shit show, discussing how many Diet Cokes the President drinks daily or the nature of his racism and misogyny… the rest of the world could give a shit… Their concern is that they’ve put most of their eggs in the United States basket and now, that’s a dangerous place to be. The Grammy’s have never been an award show that felt authentic to me. In other words, not to say that songs or albums that have won awards weren’t worthy, but it has always felt that so much of the recorded world was left out of the proceedings… so the results were never quantifiable in the context of a level playing field… and increasingly with every passing year, more and more complaints about the telecast in its aftermath… and in terms of declining viewership, Om Malik makes some great points about how media is consumed these days. The Grammy’s days may be numbered.
